"Of what a strange nature is knowledge! It clings to the mind when it has once seized on it like a lichen on the rock." - Mary Shelly, Frankenstein, ch. XIII

Gertrude Kimber
Burleigh
1816-1869
Gertrude Kimber Burleigh lived in an activist family even before her marriage to Charles C. Burleigh. Her marriage, like other Abolitionist unions, was a partnership, presaging twentieth- and twenty-first century heterosexual marriages for being friendships and shared political agendas.

Signature from Gertrude Kimber Burleigh's 1857 letter to Samuel J. May Jr., in the Boston Public Library's Abolitionist collection, found online here.
