"Of what a strange nature is knowledge! It clings to the mind when it has once seized on it like a lichen on the rock." - Mary Shelly, Frankenstein, ch. XIII
Ruth Burgess Burleigh
1820-1909
Ruth Burgess Burleigh was the youngest daughter of Thomas Burgess, a long-time resident of Little Compton, Rhode Island, and an ardent abolitionist. Ruth was a bookish child who married poet George Shepard Burleigh in 1849. Her surviving documents reveal that she, too, was a poet, and concerned with the Woman's Rights Movement.
